The most ambitious photonics project at the "Deep Tech Atelier" conference

News
On April 20 and 21, the Riga Technical University (RTU) Science and Innovation Center (SIC) took part in the conference "Deep Tech Atelier 2023", which this year's leading theme was the technologies of the space and photonics industries. Over two days, the event gathered a large number of participants from many countries around the world, so RTU SIC took the opportunity at its stand to introduce the attendees to one of the most ambitious photonics projects in Latvia, which is implemented through the cooperation of the best Latvian research institutes and universities.

The most ambitious photonics project in Latvia

Since this year's main focus of the "Deep Tech Atelier" conference was on photonics industry technologies, RTU SIC offered to get acquainted with Latvia's most ambitious project in the photonics industry, "Smart materials, photonics, technology, and engineering ecosystem" at its stand.

In this National Research Program, scientists combine competencies to create photonics, smart materials, and robotics innovations needed by industry, which are planned to be developed into commercial materials. Also, with the cooperation of project partners, optical fiber-based technologies will be created for wide application in pollution, disease, and construction durability monitoring, combining competencies in physics, microtechnology, biology and medicine, and organ model technologies for testing medicinal substances. During the event, it was possible to meet the project implementer - representatives of the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia, as well as other project partners and scientists involved in the project.

Science-intensive technologies and Innovation communities

Along with the activities described above, the event's visitors had the opportunity to get acquainted with the three knowledge and innovation communities of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) under the umbrella of RTU SIC, namely "EIT Food Hub Latvia", "EIT Urban Mobility RIS Hub Latvia" at the RTU SIC stand, and "EIT RawMaterials Baltic Hub".

The research is financed by the Latvian Science Council within the project "Smart Materials, photonics, technology, and engineering ecosystem" (VPP-EM-FOTONIKA-2022/1-0001).
